"DNA" is a song recorded by Lia Marie Johnson, released as her debut single through Capitol Records on October 7, 2016. The single discusses family alcoholism, inspired by Johnson's personal life.[1]
Background
She revealed in an interview, "There was one day before the release I remember feeling really insecure about because of how honest it is. The response, though, has made it so worth it. I could have never imagined this response and just how many people have been able to relate to my story."[2] She additionally described the song as "dark" and "moody".[3] The accompanying music video was posted to her YouTube channel on October 21, 2016. It was directed by Gabriel Younes and produced by Anthem Films and Elliot Sisson.
It was featured in the YouTube Premium film, The Thinning. Lyrics reflect on the struggle of an alcoholic and absentee father, and the fear that she may turn out to be like him.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Dark as midnight
Six pack Coors Light
You don't look the same
Past my bedtime
Blue and red lights
Come take you away
[Pre-Chorus]
Hate to see you like a monster
So I run and hide
Hate to ask but what's it like to leave me behind
[Chorus]
I won't be, no I won't be like you
Fighting back, I'm fighting back the truth
Eyes like yours can't look away
But you can't stop DNA
No, you can't stop DNA
[Verse 2]
Twice a year, you come in crashing
Nice to see you too
Johnny Cash and backseat laughing
Always ends too soon
[Pre-Chorus]
Hate to say hello 'cause I know that it means goodbye
Hate to ask but what's it like to leave me behind
[Chorus]
I won't be, no I won't be like you
Fighting back, I'm fighting back the truth
Eyes like yours can't look away
But you can't stop DNA
No, you can't stop DNA
[Bridge]
Are the pieces of you
In the pieces of me?
I'm just so scared
You're who I'll be
When I erupt
Just like you do
They look at me
Like I look at you
[Chorus]
I won't be, no I won't be like you
Fighting back, I'm fighting back the truth
Eyes like yours can't look away
But you can't stop DNA
No, you can't stop DNA
